
MARTIN SMITH
Founder and Managing Partner at SmithDistrict
Martin served for over a dozen years as the full time Executive Director of the Barracks Row Main Street program on Capitol Hill in Washington DC. He has spent his career running and providing consulting services to commercial corridor management organizations throughout the mid-Atlantic region, having helped to form a half a dozen new Main Street programs in the District over the past ten years and consulting with countless others.
Martin's expertise covers the full spectrum of Main Street and nonprofit management, including past work on the Main Street Four Point Approach, organizational management, staffing, board development, small business technical assistance, historic facade improvement projects, event planning and monetization, fundraising development, grant writing, and even forensic accounting work and audit preparation after financial files have been lost or damaged.
Martin holds a BA from the George Washington University and a Master of City Planning degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He also holds an AICP certification from the American Institute of Certified Planners through the American Planning Association, and was one of the first nine individuals nationwide to receive the Main Street America Revitalization Professional (MSARP) credential from the National Main Street Center. Martin has been a District of Columbia resident for nearly twenty five years - living in all four quadrants of the city at least once during that time - and currently resides in Dupont with his dog Sam.

DIANA SCHWARTZ
Lead Main Street Consultant at SmithDistrict
Our Lead Main Street Consultant Diana Schwartz MSARP, HREFP is the former director of the award-winning River District Association in Danville, VA; under her leadership, RDA received a 2018 National Trust Vote Your Main Street award, and the highest recognition possible with Main Street America, the Great American Main Street Award (GAMSA) in 2023. Over the course of her career with RDA, Danville attracted more than $400K in new investments into the downtown area, and more than 60 new businesses opened in the district.
Diana has more than twenty years of experience working professionally in executive nonprofit leadership, fund development, entrepreneurial ecosystem/collaborative systems development, and advocacy. She is also a dynamic and frequently requested Public Speaker with more than 40 years experience on the stage and screen.
Diana has worked in Economic Development and Downtown Revitalization since 2013 and earned the Main Street America Revitalization Professional (MSARP) credential from the Main Street America Organization in May 2017, and the Historic Real Estate Finance Professional (HREFP) from NCI in 2024.

CRISTINA AMORUSO
Lead Economic Development Consultant at SmithDistrict
Cristina Amoruso holds a Masters in Architecture from the University of Miami and a Masters in Historic Preservation from Columbia University. Currently serving as the Director of Small Business and Entrepreneurship at the Alexandria Economic Development Partnership, she plays a pivotal role in leading initiatives that support the city’s small and local business community. Her proactive strategies aim to create equity and accessibility for entrepreneurs working and living in the city.
With a career spanning over two decades in economic and community development, Cristina began her professional journey in Boonton, NJ, crafting successful business recruitment and retention strategies that diversified retail and restaurant offerings. Recruited by Barracks Row Main Street in 2007, she initiated purposeful growth, establishing targeted business recruitment, retention, and expansion programs.
Transitioning to the DC Department of Small and Local Business Development in 2008, Cristina redefined the mission of the Commercial Revitalization Division, transforming its flagship programs into a comprehensive city-wide economic development initiative. As the Manager of the Commercial Revitalization Division and DC Main Streets Coordinator, she strategically directed a $12M annual budget, revitalizing 68 commercial districts in Washington, DC. Her adept grants management and advocacy for legislative changes cultivated crucial partnerships, securing additional funding for enhanced program effectiveness.

MIKE PFISTER
Lead Designer and Muralist at SmithDistrict
Mike is an experienced graphic designer, painter, and muralist. In his role as Lead Designer with SmithDistrict, Mike plays a critical part in our placemaking efforts by helping clients with brand identity, marketing materials, wayfinding signage and placemaking murals. Creating the "instagrammable art" that localities crave is one of his core strengths, as is working with small businesses on interior and exterior graphics and signage.

Mike holds a BA from Shepherdstown University, and has an extensive background in museum exhibit design. He currently resides in the charming small town of Frederick, MD with his two cats.
